Aly,
I read a horrifying article in the NY Times about the drought in East Africa. Apparently there has been little or no rain for such a long time from Kenny north to Ethiopia and Somalia that crops are all withered, livestock is dying, and the conditions seem poised only to get worse. Is there any evidence of this where you are on the coast? Is there any discussion of the drought within your group?
No news yet on people to contact. More on that later once I get a chance to follow up (like th week of Feb 27th once my next grant application is submitted).
Love,
Dad

Thanks dad...
Um drought? yeah i know all about that. They're rationing water in Nairobi and the high lands now. Electricity to because many of the power plants generate energy via water power from rivers...
Um... it rained for 30 seconds this morning. Second time since I've been here. Everyone ran outside on out courtyard-like area with buckets to catch the rain. However, because I am on the coast, most rain has to be taken from the sea and boiled or purifired or whatever anyway.
Drought... Most of the country is on high alert, many people are dying, but we have tons of water as students and while i conserve and try not to take more than one shower a day, there have been no cases where the water hs shut off except for at the other geust house some of the students here are staying at, and it was only for about 2 hours.
The power cut out last night though for about an hour.
Other than that, dad, this country hasn't had a "normal" year of rainfall in about a decade. Lake Turkana in the north dries up by 3 meters every year, a centimeter a day on average.
yay up north. Way to be the arid desert you are. It's funny though, its as if the people here haven't really come to terms with the fact that most of the country is desert. sandy dry desert. they still try to farm and everything.
Whatevers thats all i know. if you want me to mail you some articles from the newspapers here i can do that OR you could go to the webpages of The Standard (kenya), The Nation (Kenya) or The East African.
Let's all try our best to keep freaking out mom, okay?
