Let's sing it together:
"Where can you find Aly? Only in Kenya. Gone to Kenya? Yep that's Aly!"
What do I think Kenya will be like:
I think it will be hot, humid, pretty sunny, longer days, crickets for breakfast, sadstorms on Thursdays, Corrupt peoples everywhere with more crime than Vietnam (vietnam had nothing).
I think the people will all be super skinny and I will wish I had brought rice trucks with me.
Kenya will be dry with not much water (or at least clean water). It will rain all the time and still look like a dessert, or desert... mmm flan....
I think internet will be slow and I will be more frustrated to have sun burns than to have cricket for breakfast.
I think I will miss my Boy and all my Simmons Girls, and Drama, and My Kitty. And SOME family members, you can geuss who you are, Nana, Aunt Donna, Irene, the turtles, etc.
I can assume that four months away from my family will be awesome, even if it is the desert with the crickets and the hot.
I assume that the thing I will miss most while I am in Kenay (aside from Boy) is showering and also mexican food. mmm burrito...
I will have trouble with Swahili.
I will not know what the heck I'm doing with the Independeant study project. I will have to call Liz.
I will miss you all.
Love you,
Aly

Hi baby,
Just did some researched and it seems that Kenyan Host families have a rep of being very nice to American students; I hope that holds true for you.
Eating Crickets can’t be much worse then Bartal Food.
Also there is a good chance a Kenyan will win the Boston Marathon so maybe you will able to celebrate there victory in Kenyan which will be cool.
I promise to only give you good news ( now I know how people who work for Bush must feel like)
Love Boy aka Boy

Hi Digby and Petrie are fine and well fed--I finally figured out how to tell Digby from Petrie (its the lines on the shell--right?) anyway Daddy says he thinks they have grown. Mulder hasn't grown however--but he is still well fed. Haven't heard the squeak-toy sound since we took him to the vet and did the medicine thing so he must be cured! yay.
You trip still sounds fantastic even though it has its moments I'm sure.
This past week at school has been busy--the kids have started the dreaded CMts and now because of the NCLB (pronounced nickelby, No Child Left Behind) every grade is tested. The security for the tests is cosmic--you have to report a "breach" for the most silly things: like a teacher taking his or her eyes off the bins we carry the tests in from the locked office to the classrooms. There was one forgotten at the copier for about two seconds and we all thoufght we were gonna have to call Scully and Mulder!
This past week I received 96 1X1 X2 glass bottles for cataloging the now burdegeoning sand collection. The project is booming and we are plotting the locations and labelling the samples. We have also determined the best amount to collect: about a full babyfood jar worth: we pour off a few tablespoons worth for the 1x1x2 bottle (for the permanent collection) and the rest goes into a baby food jar for the kids to perform their science experiments/sand analysis activities.
So now that we hava a good system for keeping track of the samples we think we can create an integrated curriculum unit that is worthy of a journal article. Cool huh?
So all this is by way of reminding you to collect sand wherever you are in Kenya--even in the west and north parts away from the coast (rivers, lakes, deserts--any place) and that a half of a half liter bottle is a good sample amount. (like a measuring cup) you Vietnam samples plot out at between 15 and 21 degrees North/105 to 107 East longitude. Cool huh? Lamu Kenya is 2:16 South latitude and 40:52 East longitude, neat huh? I'm learning a lot about latitude and longitude too! that's an added bonus to the geology of the sand samples. It's interesting.
Where do you head next on your travels? How is the Swahili coming? It sounds like its coming along but hard--I admire your perseverence--I couldn't do it! good for you.
Nanas birthday is the 7th and we'll be visiting her on the 10/11 for a birthday dinner. Miss you.
Stay well and happy- we're looking forward to Kenyan cooking when you get back and we will stock up on basil and burritos in exchange! Keep the news coming--this is a wonderful blog
Love, mommy XXXOOO
