its been raining here alot because its monsoon season.
there has also been no power for the past five days. Yay for today. The reason for this power outage, i have been told, is that the people at the power plant are selling the oil on the black market. I love kenya.
not much to do or say today other then congrats to maddie for getting into school and i really miss mexican.
yes, i come home "soon" but its still four full weeks away so lets not get me excited.
Lamu is a very interesting place as a woman on my own. I will be wearing a buibui and hijab for the remander of my time here I think to avoid the stares and taunts and cat calls from the fully ridiculous men.
Went to a Henna party last night. was basically a wedding reception where the bride got full henna. Much younger crowd then at the other weddings I have been too. Now my hips hurt from all the dancing because you basically have to dance from the hip and pop it in every direction. um... I'd show you but this is a computer and not very accepting of my visual material at the moment.
Anyway, more later, i have to write while we have electricity.
Love and kisses.

Hi there Aly.......we too have been in a monsoon here for a few days. I have the good fortune not to have to go out. Aunt Donna is up with Cally. Ty has taken Kate away for a long weekend. Tippys and Cally went to the Boston Zoo. Cally told me she rode on the merry go round Zebra,,,and then imitated his/hers call! Your Mom called me this morning full of plans for the graduation party.. she probably will share this with you..How is the book coming along.......without power you still had the typewriter to plug along on...everyone enjoys sharing all the adventures you are having...but I am sure you miss Boston....we miss you Luv Nana

yeah a typewriter would have been useful if there was indeed a typewriter. however, and this is really proof that this is a third world country, the only typewriter in the country are in the highest government offices so that they can continue even without power. That means however that typewriters are considered a very sophisticated and advanced form of technology to which only the elite have access. The lower classes and people in the towns only have access to computers which are considered inferior as they often do not work. But thats Kenya. So other than that all is well. I have my phone all the time so if any of you want to call me it 011 254 736 932 303. remember I am 7 hours ahead so if you are just waking up, its afternoon for me. Um... I'm fine. Been wearing a buibui but that seems do do the opposite of get me less attention from the men who sit on the pier in hopes of dating the white woman. Instead I get lots and lots of attention from the usually reserved muslim men who now watch me walk past as if I'm bait for a pack of hawks. Except that I'm exaggerating and its not that bad. But needless to say I only wore the buibui for one day. Nana, sorry you haven't been getting out much but i bet with all the rain your little patio garden looks lovely! anything new this year or do you still keep the geraniums in the window box? You always have such cute little volunteer plants that look as if they were put there on purpose Other than that, love you boy. Thanks for calling me mom and dad. -Aly-

you better still call me around 4-5 my time.
You used a typewriter. hahaha I bet you loved it too. I bet you wish you'd never gotten a computer.
Anyways, I am watching a dhow race this afternoon between 2 and 3 30 but just a heads up, it might very well run alittle late.
Love and kisses. (dhows are sailboats)

Hi Aly, Sorry I haven't posted a message in a while, been soooo busy, I haven't had much time to myself. Last weekend we went up to take care of Cally while Ty took Kate away for the weekend for her birthday. We had fun Saturday at the Franklin Zoo (where we saw Jane Goodale!) and then Sunday we went to the children's museum. All in all a wonderful time. Cally really enjoyed the Zoo. Everytime we left the house after that she would walk down the front sidewalk saying, "We're going to the zoo to see animals, right, Ona?" So we had to look for animals at the museum and the grocery store! Kate and Ty came back Monday mid day but Glenn had to leave to get to a meeting Monday in NJ so I took the train home Monday evening. I thought of you because you are such a seasoned train traveler and I didn't know what to do. I've traveled by train very little. I wasn't sure what platform, I didn't know what a quiet car was, etc. etc. But it was a nice ride and Glenn picked me up in NJ so it went smoothly. They even had an electric outlet so I could plug in my computer and do some work and play cards! This weekend is busy too. Our friends Marilyn & George are coming for the weekend so we are taking Nana out for dinner tonight, then Marilyn, her daughters and I are going to NYC for the day on Saturday morning, then Uncle Glenn got tickets for an ice show Saturday night because it is our anniversary today (33 years!), then I have a bridal shower luncheon on Sunday. I can't wait for Sunday evening when I can finally rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next weekend Joey is graduating from Keene, so we are going to New Hampshire to celebrate with him. We are taking a few extra days while we are there to takes some hikes to the waterfalls in the White Mountains. I hope the weather is good, but if not, there are always the outlets. Well, that's all the news from here. Three and a half weeks and you will be home. Can't wait to see you. Love, Aunt Donna
